PVD (physical vapor deposition) is a technology used to produce thin films and coatings. The coating material is typically a vaporized metal alloy, while the subtrate can be almost any material. PVD provides a hard, durable coating, and since the coating is metallic, the appearance can be quite striking. These cell phone housings were coated with PVD, after polishing the aluminum housings to an ultra smooth finish.
